March 20, 1972 Monday

It was D-day today. We played paddle ball and basketball and cleaned up.

This evening we played cards with the Connor family. They look really great and are coming along fine.

I owe the branch president an apology. He is a humble, sincere and inspired man. I feel bad about my comments made on page 36.

March 19, 1972 Sunday

Today was a busy day. We put in 12 hours and tought three meetings. The last meeting was with the Smith family, and they really look golden. They are considering coming to church next week and seem sincere in their interest. That meeting lasted from 6:30 to 9:00.  After which I closed my two day fast. Elder Mathes had been sick and closed his at noon because he was getting week.

March 18, 1972 Saturday

Today the Samoan people who are performing at the Hilton in put on a program for the church. Most of them are members of the church and they sing "Love at Home" with the audience.  During "Love at Home" Prince who is the star broke down in tears. It was through Prince's missionary efforts that six of his group joined the church. It was really a touching affair.

We taught the Connors a meeting on apostasy. It looks good for them.

March 17, 1972 Friday

Not much of a important happen today, Friday. We tracted and went on callbacks all day and went to a Bible study, but we couldn't find anyone there so we spent the evening with brother and sister Pearson. We opened our 2 day fast at 5 o'clock.

March 16, 1972 Thursday

We taught to meetings today. One was to Charles heart, a student at North Dakota State University. The other was to Jean Rohr.  Whose wife I have about two months is a member. They both look good.

We stopped at brother and sister Boes on the way home but they were going out so we came on home

March 15, 1972 Wednesday

We had a wonderful meeting with sister Lamb. She has decided to be baptized, and we set the date for April 8, 1972.

We studied and rested most of the rest of the day. Elder Mathis is just about over the flu.

We watched Billy Graham on TV at the Ohlstrom's. He is a fabulous speaker, but just doesn't have all the truth.

March 14, 1972 Tuesday

My companion is almost better now. We made it out to do a little work this afternoon. We taught a meeting to some Jesus freaks. My companion didn't teach the meeting the way I think it should have been taught. He put the people on the defensive and cut them down. I had to step in and cool things down. I finally left to go to the car after a book of Mormon. The spirit of contention was stick in the air and I had to leave.

We washed our clothes and spent the evening with Lori Hanson and her mother.

March 13, 1972 Monday

Today was sort of a recuperating day. We didn't do much but this evening we visited the Connors long enough to get a book from him that his minister gave him (catholic). Maybe we can keep it long enough for him to read the Book of Mormon.

After we got our greedy hands on his book we went out to get some cold medicine for brother Fred Pearson. He supplies the missionaries with medicine free of charge.  When we arrived home the traveling elders, Elder Neitaur and Johnson were here to stay the night.

March 12, 1972 Sunday

This morning we attended priesthood meeting and Sunday school, then came home and rested until second meeting at 5:00.  I talked and second meeting today and the topic was forgiveness. Not to brag or anything, I think I did a good job and put my point across very well. Mr. Connors attended both meetings today also.

After sacrament we went to the Ohlstens and bummed a little food. They decided that they wanted the lesson over again, so he gave them a first discussion. On June 10 1972, they will have been baptized when year

March 11, 1972 Saturday

Today was just like Friday, March 10. It's getting to me.

March 10, 1972 Friday

Today has got to be the worst day of my mission so far. My companion is sick and didn't get out of bed all day. I did nothing but study, and study, and study, and study, and study, and study. I learned a lot but it nearly drove me crazy.

I baked brownies to break the monotony. Now back to studying.

March 9, 1972 Thursday

Today we tracted till noon. In the afternoon we went on callbacks. This evening we gave a blessing to a sick Indian woman in the hospital (St. Luke's).  There was an old lady in the same room who is making a lot of racket, but as soon as the blessing began she shut up, and then started in again a little after we are finished. I guess the Lord wanted silence.

March 8, 1972 Wednesday

My companion was sick in bed almost all day long. We got out long enough to teach the Connor family a meeting. We showed them a film the "Nephi Rock" which was dug up in Mexico with the dream of father Lehi on it.

Sr. Mary Boe cut my hair tonight. She is a hairstylist and did a very good job.

Pres. Cobia called me to ask if I would talk in sacrament meeting next Sunday. I will talk about forgiveness.

March 7, 1972 Tuesday

Today we taught a congregational preacher named Mr. Marszolf.  We gave him the fifth discussion and he likes our concept of heaven. He's coming along very well.

My companion pulled an unforgivable sin on me. He took me to the Pearson's and made me give a first discussion. The thing that so bad it is that they are members and he was AP, assistant to the president, and his mission. I had a suspicion all along that they might be pulling one on me. I felt dumb when I realized I was teaching someone who knows more about the gospel than I do. I learned a lot from it anyway. We then had dinner with the Pearson's and then went to the Ohlstroms to tend their kids for an hour while they and the Pearson's went to the Conrad Hilton to watch a performance by some Samoan people who are members of the church.  They are musicians and came from Samoa to tour the world doing their show. They have strong testimonies of the Gospel.

March 6, 1972 Monday

Today we played paddle ball and basketball at the YMCA. After that we had a dinner appointment, after which we played cards with the Connor family. The Conners are golden contacts. Mr. Connors is in AA and very slow at learning, but tonight is the first time we've seen him laugh and smile. They are really coming along. We wouldn't have come to play cards if they hadn't been golden.

March 5, 1972 Sunday

Today I met the people of the Fargo branch at church. There are really some find members here. I have never seen such a small chapel before my life. Everything seems so funny in a branch, mainly this one because the branch president doesn't seem to be a very inspired man.  He sat up there and picked his nose and chewed on his fingernails in front of everyone. I guess they don't have as many people to choose from, so I guess it will take a little getting used to.

March 3, 1972 Friday

We tracted about seven hours today, but most of it was apartment houses. It's just as cold in North Dakota as in Minneapolis. There is a blizzard warning out tonight.

I am just getting a good start on my study guide. I realize the mistakes I've made by not following my study guide. But I think I can catch up. Elder Mathis is really a fine elder and missionary

March 2, 1972 Thursday

I passed the six discussion off to Elder Hellwig this morning before leaving for Fargo. I was on the bus from 10:40 AM to 4:30 PM. I traveled with Elder Silver and Elder Thompson. Elder Mathis met me at the station. He seems to be a good missionary and has the right attitude. We went on callbacks then came back and studied.

March 1, 1972 Wednesday

Today was wasted. We slept till noon because I had a cold or the flu, and packed in the afternoon. We had a meeting at Bridgeman's with the same group mentioned on page 32+ Elaine Grubstad.

February 29, 1972 Tuesday

This morning was the last new elders meeting in a series of six. The speaker was Pres. Russel. His topic was on obeying the rules set forth by the Lord. We toured the "Oman" plant which makes standby units for emergency. We were taken through by Don Lewis, whom we tracted out a week ago.

We ran around town looking for a duffel bag for me to pack some of my things in, because I've collected too much to put in two suitcases.

Miss Fisk took elder Crozier and I out to dinner tonight. She bought us a shrimp dinner at the Steak House. After dinner we drove around looking at some of the sites of Northeast Minneapolis.

February 28, 1972 Monday

We played basketball till noon and came home to eat. Elders Crockett and Weston called to see if we wanted to go with them and Smith and Ford to tour the beer brewery factory called "Grain Belt."   We arrived too late so we all went and played pool. I didn't feel good all the time we were playing pool because the place just felt wicked.

We had a dinner at Tony Marino's sisters house with the whole district. Tony's sisters (two of them) and their husbands, and her mother are all nonmembers and investigating the church. The elders there tonight where elders Taylor John Smith; Salt Lake City Utah, Tom Ford; Salt Lake City, Brian David Newbold; Providence Utah, Elder Hellwig; Albini California, Elder Owen H Crockett; Pocatello Idaho, Elder Weston Randolph; Utah Elder Brown Crozier; Jerome Idaho and myself.

February 27th 1972 Sunday

We went to correlation meeting, priesthood, and Sunday school. After Sunday school we ate dinner at the Grubstads.  At Sacrament meeting we had a special missionary program. There were many nonmembers and I think it will be an effective meeting.

We had a golden family set up to teach but they had unexpected company so we studied all night.  (The family was baptized in April by Elder Crozier and Cox.) (mr. and Mrs. Lawhead.)

February 26 1972 Saturday

Today was almost wasted. We studied all morning and half the afternoon. At noon in the mail was my transfer to Fargo, North Dakota effective March 2, 1972. My new companion will be elder Gary Mathis.

We had dinner at the Bickles and spent the evening talking with them

February 25, 1972 Friday

Today we tracted for the first time this week and we met some nice people.

We talked with our agnostic friend Mr. Gulbertson for a few hours, after which other Crozier got a haircut.

We had dinner with the Grubsteads and spent the evening there.

February 24, 1972 Thursday

Today we taught four meetings. We had two meetings scheduled for this evening, so we split up with the zone leaders. I went to the Hansons with Elder Bingham and Elder Crozier went to Mr. Haddons with Elder Peterson.

It looks like I may be transferred on March 2. I hope not because I would like to work longer with the people here, but I will go where I am sent.

February 23, 1972, Wednesday

Today was stone conference. It was a very good meeting. The speakers were (Brian) Elder Hellwig from Albany California, Elder David Newbold from Providence Utah, Elder Van Duren the assistant to the president. Sister King and Pres. King spoke also.  The zone leaders for the Minneapolis zone are now elders Peterson from Pocatello Idaho and Elder Bingham from Arizona. After conference we went to a smorgasbord to eat.  We learned how to consecrate oil today also. We were able to accomplish much else today except study.

February 22, 1972 Tuesday

Today we had a new elder meeting. Immediately afterwards we taught a golden contact named Tim Jones. It looks very good and promising.

We called sister Dolid and she axed us.  I couldn't believe it because I really thought she would be baptized. It really disappoints me. Her husband is Jewish and I think that has something to do with it.

Pres. King interviewed me this morning it was really nice to talk to him for a few minutes.

We opened a fast tonight in preparation for zone conference tomorrow. We are also fasting for the Minneapolis second Ward missionary Sacrament Meeting and Tim Jones.

February 21, 1972 Monday

Today was an uneventful D-Day. We played basketball from 8 o'clock till noon and slept all afternoon.

When meeting fell through this evening so we went home and called context trying to set up appointments.

February 20, 1972, Sunday

Today was Minneapolis stake conference. Three of the speakers were President King, Pres. Russel, and apostle Marvin J Ashton. I am at Elder Ashton also. I also met Harmon Killebrew, the Mormon basketball player.

Brother Van Dan was also our only contact out to church this week he is a Catholic Sunday school teacher and attended conference.

February 19, 1972 Saturday

We chatted today for two hours. We tracted out a golden family by the name of Lewis. We talk to them for about an hour. Two meetings fell through today and we spent most of the rest of the day handing out announcements to the missionary Sacrament Meeting to be held on 27 February. We ate supper at the Bickles tonight.

February 18, 1972 Friday

Today we tracted about two hours.  After lunch we went on callbacks. We didn't accomplish very much. We stopped at the Kirks and had supper. After supper we visited with the Kirks till time to come home.

February 17, 1972 Thursday

Today was a rotten day it snowed last night and we didn't leave till noon. In the afternoon we went on call back and axed about 15 people. This evening we talked for about three hours to an Assembly of God man. He is a bachelor and lives in an old unkept shack, but he was very nice to us.

February 16, 1972

We tracted for three hours today. We tracted out some possible golden contacts. We went on callbacks in the afternoon and had a DA with the Furhers.

We had an excellent gospel discussion with the Sutherlands. They are special and as golden as they come. We were there for four hours.

We opened a fast for sister Dolid and brother and sister Sutherland to help them know the truth.

February 15, 1972. Tuesday

This morning we worked with the zone leaders. I tracted with Elder Bingham.

In the afternoon we went on callbacks and two meetings fell through.

We played basketball with the explorers and some contacts, and the other elders.

I got sick and we came home after that.

February 14, 1972 Monday

Today we played basketball from 8:30-11:00.

We taught sister Dolid a fifth discussion and showed her "Man's Search for Happiness."  It looks like a baptism for sure. She attended Relief Society and she loved it.

We showed filmstrips to the Bickle family and played them a Paul Dunn tape.  I was asked to give a special prayer for their son Danny in Boot Camp in San Diego. It was an evening well spent.

February 13, 1972 Sunday

Today was just another Sunday. I forgot that tomorrow was Valentine's Day, but I did write Diane a juicy letter today.

After church we went to Tony Marino for supper. We watched Ben Hur part one on her TV and talk to her sister that is a Jehovah's Witness.

February 12, 1972 Saturday

Today is Saturday. We had another Bible bash – only this time it is with our Seventh-day Adventist contact. We got nowhere. The man is spiritually ignorant and was ignorant to us too. He reads only when he wants to in the Scriptures. He was axed.

We gave a second discussion to the Surmons.  They have a son named Scott. They are fascinated with the book of Mormon.

I made a tape tonight to send to Rick Gooch in the Cumorah Mission, and began on a tape for home.

After having to Bible Bashas in 24 hours, I can see the importance of knowing the Bible inside and out.

February 11, 1972, Friday

Today is Friday. We tracked it for a wild this morning and taught Mrs. Dolad a fourth discussion at 12:45.

We visited Tina, who had invited a Jehovah's Witness friend of hers over. We talked for hours and my companion got very mad at her. He is still steamed up about it. She called us anti-Christ because we believe in fighting wars for our country. That really chapped elder Crozier.

We went to an Eagle Scout Court of honor tonight. The Eagle Scout was Doug Haddon.  It was a really nice meeting. It sort of makes me feel bad that our scout program doesn't have a very good operation. They don't honor them enough for the things they do, and let them know how important it is to be an Eagle Scout

February 10, 1972, Thursday

Today is starting lousy also. I'm fasting and praying for a true knowledge of the gospel and Elder Crozier didn't even get up until 10 o'clock. I'm fasting alone not only for personal reasons but also for Mrs. Dolad add whom I will teach a third discussion to this afternoon. (I blew it about a quarter of the way through.)

My only testimony to this point is based on faith and I am fasting and praying for A true knowledge of the  Book of Mormon, and Joseph Smith. I bought a camera today also. A Kodak X 15

February 9, 1972, Wednesday

Today has been really lousy. We didn't leave until 12 o'clock to go to district development meeting. Elder Crozier's back has been hurting him quite a bit and he didn't get out of bed till 10 AM

We had a dinner appointment with the Kirks and showed filmstrips to them afterwards.

February 8, 1972 Tuesday

We went to a new elders meeting this morning. Elder Crozier is hurting a lot from playing basketball he has had back trouble before and his back was thrown out of place and it's killing him, so we couldn't go out except for a few hours this afternoon.

We took a PofG and D&C to Tina and Mrs. Dolad.  Mrs. Dolad is very much interested in the church, and we think she may be our next baptism. (My first)

February 7, 1972, Monday

Today is just another preparation day. We played basketball till 12:30. I ran into a wall trying to save the ball and got a big cut over my eye. It sure gave me a headache. Elder Crozier got banged up to and we both hurt a little. We didn't go out today after that.

February 6, 1972, Sunday

Today was fast Sunday. We had an excellent fast meeting, but we just can't seem to get our contacts out to church.

We went to a Faith Temple Church meeting tonight. It was really funny with everyone running around trying to get saved. We talked to several people after the meeting that were quite impressed with our church. We have a lunch appointment with a Sargent of the Minneapolis police force, assistant director.  He is one we talk to at Faith Temple.

February 5, 1972, Saturday

We tracted this morning for about an hour. We found one golden contact who we think will be out to church tomorrow. His name is Mr. Hadddon.

We talk to a Seventh-day Adventist today. He cut us down with Scriptures concerning worshiping on Saturday. We came home and found the information we needed in "A Marvelous Work and a Wonder."  Will be ready for him next time.

Tomorrow is fast Sunday and it has been asked of everyone fast for the missionary work.

February 4, 1971, Friday

Today the wind chill factor was -50° so we quit tracting about 11 o'clock. We studied, then we presented a 1st to Mrs. Hall, then played a take to Mr. Guilbertson

We had dinner at the pickles, and an active family. We spent the evening talking with them about anything under the sun. It was very enjoyable.

February 3, 1972

Today a lot of things happened. Elder Schroeder was transferred to Buffalo Lake, to leave tomorrow at 1:30.

After going to the Mission home to pick up supplies, Elder Crozier turned right and hit a pedestrian with the car. The sun was in her eyes and neither of us saw him till after the accident. He was an old man but we are going slow and didn't think he was hurt very bad.  Elder Crozier is very worried about him and is trying to get a hold of him to find out if he is hurt badly. A police man took him to the doctor and we haven't heard yet how he is. I know how Elder Crozier feels and sympathize with, and hope that we may both be able to sleep well tonight.

February 2, 1972

The Poem I attached to this pages is one  I copied from Tony Marino's place today when elder Hellwig and I went there. She is an Italian convert, and very fat, but is a very wonderful person. The other elders are teaching her family.

February 2, 1972 Wednesday

Retracted for tuna half hours today. After tracting we met the district leaders at Elder Smith and Ford's for a district development meeting.  Afterwards we went to McDonald's for lunch. We get a 50% ministerial discount.

After lunch we split with Elder Hellwig and Schroeder again. They talk to present king and hacked it out with him, but they departed his enemies just as they went. We split to allow a good days work to be done I went with Elder Hellwig again, and he's a cool guy.

We got back together again at 5 o'clock. We had a DA at 6 o'clock. Elder Crockett and Weston were there also. They are called as Lamanite Missionaries.  They should some films about their work and it was really touching. It was my doing some Lamonite work went on a mission.

After dinner we showed "Christ in America" to the Hansons. They are fine people. Mrs. Hanson would like to be baptized her husband is holding her up.

February 1, 1972, Tuesday

This morning we went to the second new elders meeting. The speaker was but shipping them. He spoke on Waze to get priesthood burgers into the church. There is a shortage of priesthood workers and no men converts coming into the church.

After new elders meeting elder Crozier and I split with Elder Hellwig and Schroder. They have been fighting and not getting along so we split up so they could get some work done.  Elder Crozier went with Elder Schroeder and I went with other Hellwig. Elder Hellwig is district leader.  Elder Crozier and I got back together at 5 o'clock this evening.

After dinner at the Burger King, we went to Frank and Tina's to teach Frank. Tina is sister Matchett's daughter.  Frank was afraid we are going to preach to him so he wouldn't even come out. We were discouraged and felt wasted when he left.

I received three letters today, one from home,  one from David Barkley and one from Diane (Cherry).

January 31, 1972, Monday

Today was another prep day. We played basketball at the stake center till noon. After basketball we went to the Seigelbergs for dinner and to talk to Mr. Seigelberg about the church. We ended up doing some woodwork on his shop tools. I messed around with the leithe for a long time.

We went to Matchetts for dinner tonight. Sister Matchett's mother was there and had been sick so we gave her a blessing to get well. David was making a big fuss about getting a hockey stick. He had been very spoiled and was sulking like a six-year-old. He is 14. He got mad at his mother because she would not take him out again to get another stick.  Sister Matchett asked us to talk to him and straighten him out. We tried to make him realize that you don't always get what you want, but he was still sulking when we left.

Tuesday, February 10, 2015

January 30, 1972, Sunday

Today we went to correlation meeting. Everyone is all fired up about missionary work, and it might just get us somewhere.

We had no contacts to church today. We feel there is something wrong but we don't know what. A golden meeting bombed out on us today. We have wonderful people on our list but we just can't seem to get them to church. Will have to rely on the Lord's help.

January 29, 1972, Saturday

Today was another very cold day. We chatted till we froze to death then came home to study.

We visited sister Mathett today. Her neighbor may be baptized soon.

We ran out of callbacks so we drafted some last night and then came home and studied.

January 28, 1972, Friday

It was very cold out this morning, but we chatted for a little while anyway. We were let into one house by a teenage boy whose mother was gone. When she returned she kicked us out of her house, so I got kicked out of my first house today. We went on callbacks the rest of the day and ate dinner with sister Matchet.

At 8:30 we went to a baptism. One of the elders baptizing was elder Murdock from Blackfoot. I met him afterward.

January 27, 1972, Thursday

I feel so good now. Everything is just going my way. We might have a baptism February 5. The people we work with are just great. My companion is great to be around. I have the support of my family. What else could I ask for. I received a letter from my sister Kenna, with $5 enclosed.

We went on a lot of callbacks today. Some look very promising, others got axed. We were invited to some other elders baptisms for tomorrow night.

January 26, 1972, Wednesday

Today we went to acting for several hours. The temperature was -15° with a -25° windchill. It was very cold and nobody wanted to listen to what we had to say. This afternoon we went on callbacks and axed several people, but some of them could turn out to be very interested. We won't know for a while.

We met a lot of interesting people today they are really choice people, but just a little confused. Maybe we can help them out some.

January 25, 1972, Tuesday

Today was the first new elders meeting in a series of six. The speaker was Bishop Schreiner, Son of Alexander Schreiner, cheap organist of the Tabernacle choir.

It was -20° this morning. We stayed in and studied most of the morning.

We had a DA at 5:30. After dinner we stopped at Mission home to pick up papers Elder Crozier had ordered.  We got the discussions for PJ Kirk also. At the Kirks we talked with a Baptist women. The Kirks are going to try and invite her and her family over sometime when the missionaries can come and talk to them.  Maybe we can teach them a little.

I am really enjoying my mission. Elder Crozier is just great to work with and things are running really smooth now, I am not homesick but I do miss everyone.

January 24th, 1972, Monday

Today was D-day, Elder Crozier and I helped elder Hellwigand & Schroeder move to their new apartment.

We had a dinner appointment with grandma Erickson at 5:30 this evening.  After dinner we came home and studied

January 22, 1972

Today is Sunday, January 23, 1972. This morning the missionaries met with the 70s leader and we are working on a program that is supposed to really work well. We're not sure just exactly how the program will run.

We ate dinner at the Grubsteads today and stayed till sacrament meeting. After sacrament we visited a sick member at the hospital. After that we came home and studied till time for bed

January 22nd, 1972, Saturday

Today the zone leaders came to check on The discussions. I could give the first 10 conclusions of the first discussions for they well.

After that we went tracting for around two hours. We gave one discussion to a fellow we think is a retarded case, but he agreed to read the pamphlet we left him and ask The Lord if they are true. When house retracted to give us anti-Mormon literature.  We were not able to enter this particular house, so my companion attempted to give them a discussion on the steps and 5 inches of snow. We had a big snow last night and it was -10° with wind chill of about -35°.

After teaching and lunch we visited the Paul Kirk residence and hope to work with some of their nonmember friends. After dinner at the Kirks we went ski-doing with Mr. Kirk.  We made it back in time for supper with the Kirks that night.

We then went to a baptism of Elder Smith and Ford's.  I was called as a witness to the baptism. It's Sunday tomorrow and priesthood is at 8:30. We have to pick up elder Smith and Ford for priesthood in the morning because they have no car.  I am really learning to study now, and I'm glad we have a car because it is so cold.

I really miss the family now, and I miss Diane just as much, but I concentrate on my studies and don't let it bother me. The other night, my first night in the mission field, I cried uncontrollably, so I prayed and asked the Lord to take away my feelings of homesickness.  Immediately I quit crying and I have not felt homesick sense, and I think the Lord for it.

January 21, 1972, Friday

This morning we went tracting. I gave my first door approach to a cute co-ed whose name is Miss Paulson. She lived on 1076 15th Ave. SE. in Minneapolis. She told us to come back later as she was preparing something else. We were told by three people to come back later and we were invited in by one mother. She had three children home, one little girl and two boys, and also had two sons in school. Her husband was working. We talked for a little over an hour and left a book of Mormon.  I think she would be interesting except that her husband is such a staunch Catholic. We also visited the home of the Sutherlands. They were referred to us from Temple Square in Salt Lake City. He had heard the discussions before but they are really interested in the church.  Elder Crozier gave them the second discussion and they said they would be to church next Sunday. He fully realizes that if he joins the church it will be from his heart as testified by the Holy Ghost.

I am studying the lessons hard and hoping to learn more of the Gospel for my companion

January 20, 1972, Thursday

This morning my father, Edward Lyman level gave me a fathers blessing before leaving for the airport. My flight left Salt Lake at 10:40, stopped at Rapid City South Dakota before continuing to Minneapolis and landing at 2:00 PM MST.  After dinner with Pres. king and his wife all eight new elders were assigned out to companions. My companion is Elder Cozier from Jerome Idaho. We went proselyting tonight but nobody was home, so we visited a sick member at the hospital. It's been a scary day and I have to study, so must go.

The elders I flew in with from Salt Lake where elders Ford, Johnson, Germillion, Roberts, and to others whose names I don't remember (Bueller and Cronan).

We now live in the upstairs room of a house owned by Miss Fisk, an old retired schoolmarm.  This house is supposed to be one of the oldest in the city.

January 17, 1972, Monday

This morning we were awoken at 5 AM. After the first session we went to this solemn assembly room for an hour and a half question and answer period with Harold B Lee.  He answered every question with a scripture, and had the scripture found before the question had been finished.  It was really fascinating. We took in another session after the meeting with Pres. Lee.

We took a tour of the visitor center and saw some of the movies we will be viewing in the mission field.

A man by the name of Parma who is a nuclear physicist talk to us and he is a marvelous speaker.

Bishop Vanderberg spoke to us today also.

January 16, 1972, Sunday

This morning we were awakened at 6 AM. After breakfast we went to the temple chapel for a preparatory review of the temple. After the meeting we went to the Tabernacle to listen to the Tabernacle choir broadcast.

We were given help on memorizing the discussions. I completed the first 10 conclusions of the first discussion. I set my goal at the seventh conclusion of the second discussion.

Sacrament meeting was 3 o'clock I helped pass the sacrament.

They don't give you any time for anything but studying, eating, and going to meetings.

I got to memorize 11th and 12th conclusions tonight, and I have one and a half hours to do it in.

January 15, 1972 Saturday

Today I entered the Mission home. I checked in at 11 AM and returned at 3:45 to stay. We had a lesson on how to memorize the discussions. They make it sound so easy. We had our first meal at Hotel Utah. It's time for flights out. My companion for the Mission home is Elder Johnson from Idaho Falls, Idaho.
